Throwing Away Cards

Wed Jan 25 2012
This is a topic I've been meaning to write on for a while. I was reviewing my Kanji deck and noticed that a few came up that were really *really* easy for me to answer. In fact, they have been for the past few times I had reviewed them. I then thought to myself, "Why am I keeping cards like this?". Unable to come up with an answer, I did the only other thing I could think of - I deleted it. I also deleted several others that were in the same boat. I mean, how many times do you really need to review "一"? After deletion, I felt better. I felt lighter, cleaner, and less bogged down. Refreshed, even. I no longer have to worry about wasting time reviewing stuff I already knew. I should also mention that this is by far not the only reason to delete. I also deleted some from my sentences deck. Why? I was bored with them. They weren't fun, and I was tired of looking at them. Boring cards don't get reviewed. Decks with boring cards in them don't either. Fun = done. So, I replaced those boring cards with some that I found fun. For example, I created a few cards with some ギルガメッシュ lyrics on them. I like their stuff, so it became interesting for me. It makes me want to do my reviews because, let's face it, it would be nice to understand what they're singing about. The biggest thing about deleting cards that one has to overcome is feeling bad about it. Humans are instinctively hoarders. You know it, we all know it. You wonder, "If I delete that card, how will I know what it is, or how to say it?". It follows the whole "I'll keep this for a rainy day" scenario. You've got enough on your plate trying to learn Japanese as it is. If you're bored with it, you probably won't use it that much (if at all) anyway. So, what's the difference? Why keep it? Why clutter your learning environment.Toss that bit- card to the curb. Remember, fun = done. Boring = ....not done (sorry, I tried to come up with something witty there, but I got bored so I threw that idea out). Let me put it this way - which would you feel worse about, throwing away a card, or not reviewing the cards you have because they are boring (and, in turn, not learning Japanese)? If you question it, even a little, toss it indiscriminately. You can always add it back later if you need or want to. Don't let boring, old, stinky, fermenting cards get in the way of your success. Toss that bit- card to the curb.
